Notes

  • I found a UK Birth Index that provides only an index by quarters, giving us a range of 3 months for Alice's birth date.

England & Wales, FreeBMD Birth Index, 1837-1915
    Volume 3b, Page 224
    Alice Maud Bodger
    Date of Registration Jan-Feb-Mar 1869
    Peterborough, Northamptonshire [Huntingdonshire]

Two years later Alice was enumerated with her family in the 1871census of Huntingdonshire, England.

1871 England Census, Huntingdonshire County, 18 April, OrtonLongville, page 141, St Thomas Green, Hse #3
Charles Bodger Head M 24 Laborer b Thornbaugh, Northampton, England

Mary Norman Servant 14 F General Servant b Eye, Northamptonshire
William Watson Servant 16 F Groom b Newborough, Northamptonshire

Note that Alice's birthplace is different.  The birth record reportsbirth place as Peterborough, and infers that is in Northamptonshire, but the 1871 census 2 years later reports she was born in the currentvillage of residence, Orton Longville, in Huntingdonshire.  This isalso the same county where her father was born.  It would seem this iscorrect.

The discrepancy is explained historically by later changes in countyboundaries, which placed Peterborough within the bounds orNorthamptonshire.  At the time of Alice's birth, Peterborough was inHuntingdonshire.

"The area corresponding to modern Huntingdonshire was first delimitedin Saxon times, and the modern boundaries have remained largelyunchanged since the 10th century.
    "Status
"In 1889, under the Local Government Act 1888 Huntingdonshire becamean administrative county, with the new County Council taking overadministrative functions from the Quarter Sessions. The area in thenorth of the county forming part of the municipal borough ofPeterborough became instead part of the Soke of Peterboroughadministrative county, in Northamptonshire."
    --  "Huntingdonshire," Wikipedia,http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Huntingdonshire

But another part of the discrepancy is the actual name of the village. The census says she was born in Orton Longville, not the nearby cityof Peterborough, as reported by the birth index.  For that detail, itseems more appropriate to follow the Birth Index record.  Likely  theywere living in Orton Longville, but she was born in Peterborough.

In 1881, we find Alice living in London with her aunt's family, as a"scholar," meaning student.

The 1910 census clarifies family details telling us that Alice hadfour children.  This along with the City Directory entry tells us thecorrect spelling of Eyrick's name.

Alice's husband Emyr died in 1912.  In 1914 and 1916 Alice is listedin the Salt Lake City directory with her daughter Muriel.

In 1920 Alice is identified as the niece of the Head of household. From the birthplace, we can tell that Jemima Tavener is the oldersister of Alice's father Charles.

In the 1920 census, Alice is enumerated as a widowed head of householdwith three teenage children.  At the time of finding this census, Idid not have Alice's name or her husband's name or anything elseexcept the info from the two children from the 1930 census, Eurich Vand Betty Lou.  These two seemed to match two of the three here,Eyrick V and F Louise.  It is interesting to find the switch of namesand initials for the daughter.

I then found the Salt Lake City directory for 1921, which was veryhelpful in providing some additional family information.

I found this City Directory entry before finding the 1910 censuslisting both Alice and her husband.  This directory entry was thefirst record providing Alice's husband's name and her middle initial.Cyril and Eyrick of the 1920 census are here, and still in herhousehold.  We learn that she owns a Carpet Cleaning business andEyrick is working in the business while Cyril is a student.  We findother Eynons here.  It appears that David is a son of Frank and hiswife.  All the others may also be, but the Miner might be a brother ofFrank, whom I assume is Emyr's brother.

Alice is listed in the 1925 and 1926 Seattle, Washington, citydirectories.  Eyrick is with her in 1925.  In 1926 no children arewith her; she is the only one with this surname in the directory.  Theresidence address changes between the entries.

Directory entries have Alice's name as Alice M.  Her grave informationhas her name as Maude Alice.  But the California Death Index reportsher name as Alice Maude.

On Alice's memorial on Find a Grave her name is a bit confusing, because there are two forms that are not clearly explained.  Her entryname is given as Maude Alice Bodger Bernard.  This form and ordernormally indicates that Bodger was her maiden name and Bernard one ofher married names, usually the last one.  But the confusingexplanatory subtitle tells us her original name was Maude AliceBernard, which seems to mean this was her maiden name from her father. But we know from earlier that her maiden name was Bodger.

    Maude Alice Bodger Bernard
    Original name: Maude Alice Bernard
    Birth 1869, England
Death 1959 Salt Lake County, Utah
    Spouse Emyr Eynon (1860 - 1912)
Burial Mount Olivet Cemetery, Salt Lake City, Salt Lake County, Utah
    Plot: R_121_10F

    --  Find A Grave Memorial #172429,http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=172429

However, Bernard was apparently a second married name.  I can't figureout why the Find-a-Grave memorial puts the married name as the"original name."  The California Death Index has her registered underthe name Bernard but notes her father's name was Bodger.

Note also that the memorial reports that she died in Salt Lake City, but there is an entry in California Death Index reporting her death inLos Angeles County, California.  I take this legal index as correct. It may well be that her residence was still Salt Lake and that she wasin Los Angeles when she died, either on a visit or for medicaltreatment.
