Notes

  • 1870 Federal Census, Titus County, Texas, 24 August, PO Mt Pleasant, page 244, Hse/Fam #1732
Lynch, Martha 40 F W Keeping House  $400 Real Estate $200 Personal GA
    Lynch, Grape L  18 M W Farmer GA [born abt 1852]
    Lynch, David  M W 16 GA
Wood, Elizabeth 78 F W Keeping House  $800 Real Estate $200 Personal GA

The household is managed by Grief's mother Martha C Trussell Lynch.

1880 Federal Census, Navarro County, Texas, 16 June, Subdivision 11, page 38B, Hse #331, Fam #337
Lynch, Grief  W M 37 Farmer AL GA GA [born abt 1843]
Lynch, Mollie W F 22 Wife  Keeping House  TX MS GA
Lynch, John H W M 6 Son  TX AL TX
Lynch, Samuel L  W M 1 Son TX AL TX

I note here that the age for Grief in this census is way off.  He should be about 28, not 37-8.  The age in 1900 fit the earlier information, and provide the birth date of August 1851.  Family sources, however, report his birthday as 6 August 1852.

By the 1900 census, Mollie (Mary) has died.  Grief, at age 48, is a widower with two children in his household.

1900 Federal Census, Navarro County, Texas, 20 June, Precinct 3, District 103, Page 17A, Hse #268, Fam #271

At some point Grief and Arthur moved to Malakoff, Henderson County, Texas.  Buck Lynch tells me they moved from Malakoff to Whiteflat, in Motley County, Texas, in 1911.  This is where they lived out the rest of their lives.  Buck reports that they owned Lynch and Son General Merchandise store from 1916 till they retired.  Their son Arthur retired in 1952 and the store was closed.

However, I found in the 1910 census that Arthur was already in Motley County, rather than Navarro County, living with his married sister Bertha, married to Columbus E Holladay.  Their father Grief is not in this household.  I have not yet found Grief enumerated in the 1910 census.

Holladay, Bertha  Wife F W  28 Married 13 years TX GA TX
    Lynch, Arther  Brother-in-Law M W  24 TX GA TX

I found Grief L and Arthur together in the same precinct of Motley County in 1920.

    1920 Federal Census, Motley County, Texas, 3 February, Precinct 2, District 185, Page 1A, Hse/Fam #2
Lynch, Grief L  Head  M W  67 Widowed AL AL AL Farmer
Lynch, Arther  Brother-in-Law M W  Single 33 TX GA TX

In 1930, Arthur is married and the head of the household, and also reported seemingly as the owner-manager of their store.  Grief is a "salesman" in the grocery store.

1930 Federal Census, Motley County, Texas, 19 April, Precinct 2, District 3, Page 8B, Hse #164, Fam #167
Lynch, Arthur  Head M W  Married at age 23 47 TX AL TX  Retail Merchant, Grocery Store
Lynch, Lyla H  Wife F W  28 Married at age 23 TX GA TX
Lynch, Robert R  Son M W 3 months TX TX TX [born January 1930]
Lynch, Grief L  Father M W  77 Widowed AL AL AL Salesman, Grocery Store

They have another employee, who is living with them as a boarder, Thomas O Washburn.  I note also that Whiteflat is apparently quite a big town by now.  On this page alone, there are three owners of grocery stores!  Next door to Arthur and Grief lives John D Williams, also reported as a Retail Grocery Merchant.

Then about 6 houses away, another resident, Charles D Pool, is also listed as a Retail Grocery Merchant.  Charles also has at least one employee, who is living next door to him, James P Smith, the last entry on this page of the census.

The Texas Death Index reports that G L Lynch died 26 April 1936 in Motley County, Texas.
