- This Butler line in Ireland started with the Fitzwalter family in England. The following notes describe when the Butlerage if Ireland began:
"Theobald Walter was the first of the family to migrate to Ireland where, by 1185, he had been created Chief Butler."

I find in most sources the earlier Theobalds, usually Walter and the first Butler, are listed with this spelling, and usually with the third Theobald, the spelling becomes Theobold. I have known the name previously from Germanic sources as Theobold. I have kept the two spellings for the different generations, following the majority of sources reporting these families.
