Notes

  • James Jonathan Chapel is first reported as a 9-month-old child under the name J J Chappell, son of A and M S Chapel.

Archie died some time after the birth of their third son Jeremiah in 1861 and before Mary remarried in May 1864.

I have not found James or his mother in the 1870 census.  But he appears in the marriage records of Cass County, Texas, in February 1880.  He married R M Davis.  Family sources and other censuses give us her name as Rebecca Mauldin Davis, or some genealogies have Rebecca Madeline Davis.

There is a gap in the records after 1880.  James married again in 1892, but we have no details or records about the events leading up to that.  We may surmise that James and Rebecca were divorced, but no record has been found.

They had family in Indian Territory, and it is likely they were there.  Both of them appear at different times later in their separate households in Oklahoma.  They might have been divorced in the Territory.  Oklahoma records are not available online.  They may have got a Chickasaw divorce which was then not recorded with US authorities.  Or they may have gotten a US authority divorce that is not available easily today.

James died in Cleburne, Texas, in 1922.  Rebecca lived until 1949, when she died in Tyler, in Smith County, Texas.

In 1900 Rebecca is reported as a widow, living in Parker County, Texas, west of Fort Worth with her two children.

This makes us think that James died.  But in fact we know from other records and family information that he lived on with his second wife Dora until 1922.  Did James Jonathan and Rebecca divorce, and Rebecca is erroneously reported as a widow in 1900, when she was really divorced?  There are cases like this.  Perhaps the social disfavor of divorce would lead Rebecca to report she was a widow rather than divorced?

The birth states of the parents of Oliver here do not match the 1880 census of his parents and his mother's report in this 1900 census.  Note that his parents are reported as being born in Georgia and Illinois.  James J Chappel was born in Texas, according to the 1880 census.  But note that here Rebecca in her own record is not reported born in Illinois but Texas.  (But in 1880 the birth state of her mother has been interpreted by some as an abbreviation for Illinois.  It is interpreted by others as SC, which seems to be correct.)  Birth states of Rebecca's parents change again in 1910.

Reports of birth place for James vary between Texas and Arkansas.  The 1900-1920 censuses report he was born in Texas.

Another Ramsey family is listed next, and another Chapel family is listed before this two-family household.  Head of that household Robert Ramsey seems to be a brother of Nancy, George and Lula.

The Chapell household on the other side of Nancy Ramsey and John and Dora is a widow, Nancy Chapell and her son Eddie.  I have not connected them to the Cass county Chapel line either.

By 1910, James and Dora had moved to Stephens County, Oklahoma, where they are living in Marlow.  Their location in the Marlow area is one indication this Chapel family is related to other Chapels, and their Jenkins and Christian relatives originally from Cass County, Texas.  In this census he is reported as James J, compared to John J in 1900.

This census report has one helpful bit of new data, reporting that this marriage to Dora in 1892 was the second marriage.  This may be an indication that this is the same James Jonathan Chapel who married Rebecca Mauldin (Madeline) Davis in 1880, and that they divorced some time before 1892, even though Rebecca is reported as a widow in the 1900 census.

In 1910, James' first wife Rebecca and their son Oliver and Oliver's family were in Choctaw County, Oklahoma.  But she moved with them back to Cass County, Texas by census time in 1920.

James and Dora moved from Oklahoma to Johnson County, Texas, south of Forth Worth, before the 1920 census.  It was soon after the may 1910 census, because the January 1920 census reports that Dorothy was born in Oklahoma and was 9 years old in 1920.  She was probably born in the second half of 1910, after the 1910 census.
