Niote that there are two children in the 1880 census named Joe, thesecond one being Joe W.  The child on the line just before this entryis reported as Joe, age 10.  A researcher points out that the childJoe W Ross reported in the 1880 census in Hot Srpring County,Arkansas, should be Joshua W. Ross, age 7 years.

"Joshua W. Ross rather than Joe W. Ross.  The original data on therecord is incorrect."
--  Joel Overton, Ancestry Comment, 7 October 2014

The comment above does not account for the difference in age reportedfor Joe W (stated here to be Joshua W) in 1880.  Joe W's reported ageof 7 fails to match the report that in 1870 Joshua was already 1 yearold.  Since both the first two children in 1880 are reported as Joe(or Joe W), perhaps it was the first child, age 10 in 1880, who wasthe Joshua of 1870.  (John, who was age 2 in 1870, does not appear in1880, so must have died in the meantime.)

And in 1900 J Wesley seems to match Joe W of 1880 in name but matchesthe first child Joe of 1800 in age.

This appears to be the 2nd marriage for both Hugh and Catherine.  Fromthe birth states reported for the last two children, it appears allthe reported children in the household are the children ofMargaret/Jane, Hugh's first wife.  Catherine is reported to have borne2 children and 1 still living.  But they are not in this household.

This census presents a major discrepancy and problem for theidentifiation of Joshua Ross, the husband of Angie Freeman.  The above1900 census reports that J Wesley Ross is Single, but by this timeAngie Freeman and her husband Joshua and had been married over tenyears.  Further, Angie was reported in the 1900 census as a widow, living in the same area.  Perhaps they had divorced. and these reportswere given instead of Divorce, as we sometimes find in other censusreports for divorced couples.  It was sometimes apparently done toavoid the embarassment of the Divorce in the community.

There is some general uncertainty about Jsohua's identity anyway, dueto the listing of two children in the 1880 census of the Ross familyas Joe.  This Joe, reported as age 10, matches later reports of JWesley as age 30 in 1900, and the report of Joshua Ross as age 1 inthe 1870 census (a few months' discrepancy in the actual birth date). The second Ross child in 1880 is named Joe W, but is identified by aresearcher as Joshua Wesley.  Perhaps the second child is Joshua andthe first child named Joe is actually the first child reported in the1870 census as John, age 2.
