Death of Mary Ann Patchett in an Auto Accident

Anson Paige, Sr., in a statement to a representative of the Star Saturday [13 September 1930] night said; “The boy and I had been to Chelsea and were returning with the boy driving. The truck was loaded, the truck and load together weighing about 6800 pounds. The rays from the sun blinded Anson and myself and we did not see the car until a collision was unavailable [sic]. After the crash, the truck was stopped within 100 feet of where the crash occurred.”

Both Anson Paige, Sr. and Anson Paige Jr. were gref [sic] stricken by the accident, and the latter, when questioned, stated the truck was going eighteen miles per hour when it passed over the culvert just east of the crossing where the accident occurred.

Andrew Patchett, when seen later at the hospital, said; “I was going north on Willow street and was crossing the street when the accident occurred, I never did see the truck until it was upon us and cannot tell how fast the truck was going.”

Mrs. Andrew Patchett, in reply to a question asked her at the hospital, stated that the occupants of the car did not see the truck before the accident.

The body of Mrs. Harkins was taken to the Benjamin Funeral Home where it is being held pending funeral arrangements.

Mrs. J. D. Harkins was 61 years old and had lived her entire life in Montgomery and Nowata counties. She came to the Delaware neighborhood with Mr. Harkins in 1907 and had made her home there since that time. She is survived by her husband, one son, Andrew Harkins of Drumright, and three daughters, Mrs. Genevieve Ypharraguere, San Diego, California and Mrs. Eva Paxton and Miss Bessie Harkins of the home address. Three brothers, Bruce Patchett, of Howden; A. J. Patchett of Coffeyville and Charles L. Patchett, of this city and one sister, Mrs. Henry Shaub, who lives five miles northwest of Coffeyville also survive.

The death of Mrs. Harkins came close after another tragedy in the family. On September 3, Mr. and Mrs. Harkins were notified of the death of their son-in-law, William Ypharraguere, an aviation pilot of San Diego, California who was killed on that day when a torpedo plane crashed on Otay Mesa.

Ypharraguere was attached to the squadron “V” T-2 of the aircraft squadron battle fleet. He was accompanied by J. T. O. Marquis, who leaped in a parachute and was unhurt. The condition of the plane after it hit the mesa made it impossible to determine whether Ypharraguere was pinned in the plane and could not jump or had attempted to ride the disabled aircraft to earth.

Full military services were held Friday afternoon, September 5, in San Diego, attended by many army and navy officers and private citizens in addition to a complete military escort. Following the services the body was taken to the Benning National Cemetery at Point Loma for burial. During the services at the grave a squadron of planes from the naval air station dropped flowers as a last tribute to the dead flier.

"The funeral service for the late Mrs J D Jarkins, who lost her life as the result of an automobile accident last Saturday night in this city, will be held at 10 o'clock Thursday at the Baptist Church in Delaware.  Interment will be in the Elmwood Cemetery in Coffeyville."

"John Culver of Bartlesville, manager of the Coca-Cola Bottling Company, was in the city this morning to attend the funeral service of Mrs J D Harkins, victim of the automobile accident last Saturday evening.  The truck drive[n] by Anson Paige, Jr, which collided with the Harkins car, was operated by Mr Culver's company.  Mr Harkins holds the company blameless, stating that the unfortunate affair was purely an unavoidable accident."
    ----------------------------

Death occurred from the auto accident on 13 September; the article on the 16th was on Tuesday.  The next article announces will be on Thursday.  The language of the announcement is in the future ("will be held at 10 o'clock Thursday"), which indicates it was published either on Wednesday the day before or on Thursday the morning of the funeral.

Thursday was the 18th.  Thus the funeral was on 18 September in the Delaware Baptist Church.

Burial occurred after transportation to Coffeyville, Kansas.  Probably the day of the funeral.
