Notes

  • The Hamrick Data pages reports this William A as the son of Edwin and Judith McSwain Padgett.  But he is actually the brother of Edwin, son of Wiley and Lavinia Nancy Padgett.  David Holden correctly reports William A in this connection.  The dates and places in Holden's genealogy of the McSwain, Bridges and Padgetts fits the other known facts of the Padgett family tree.

William A Padgett was born in North Carolina and remained there when others of his family moved to Tennessee then Arkansas.  The son of Edwin and Judith was William Ensley Padgett.  He was also born in North Carolina, but was taken by his parents to Arkansas.  W E is listed in Prairie Township of Arkansas County, Arkansas, with his family and some of his McSwain cousins in the 1880 census.  He later moved to Yell County, Arkansas, and died there.

In 1867, William married Judith Lovelace.  I have not found their marriage record.

    ----------------------------------
I have not found a record in the 1870 census that seems to represent William and his wife Judith.  In 1880, their daughter Lavinia (L J) is 12, so she was born about 1868.  I have found a similar entry for another William Padgett, living among families related to this family.  I have not identified the wife, who is enumerated as Chily.  This couple has a 2-month-old daughter.  I expect the Sarah Padgett here is a sister of William, Alvin Padgett likely a brother. I have not identified a Sarah or an Alvin among the Padgett clan that I have recorded.  This Padgett family is living next door to Reuben McSwain and his wife Judith.  On the other side of them is Berry McSwain, so this Chily is likely a McSwain girl.  Berry is 48 years old, thus born about 1822.

Next door to this family is another household that is definitely kin to our William A Padgett.  Barbara McSwain, wife of Berry (Greenberry) McSwain, appears to be an aunt of William A, a sister o William's father Wylie.

The name Leumana here appears to be an attempt to transcribe the name Levina or Lavinia.  See the 1900 census below.
