Notes

  • The Hamrick Data Pages, which report on many related families including McSwain, Green, Padgett, Moore, Hamrick and others, reports Hannah's birth as 5 October 1839, but David Holden, who reports in great detail on the McSwain and related lines, reports her birth as 5 August 1839.  The Hamrick data also reports her marriage to James Moore Green.

I later learned that for some reason the death date in the Hamrick information was wrong.  Hannah actually died in 1931.  (See death information at the end of these Notes.)  I detail some of the sources below.  Note also that though this source correctly reports that Hannah and James' first child was born in 1861, it errs in reporting their marriage at an estimated date of 1865.

The date of death for her husband James Moore appeared wrong, since in the 1880 census, Hannah is already reported as a widow. Later information I received from descendant Doug Green indicated that James Moore was in fact still alive.  In July 2009, Doug told me that James was in Virginia, where he had fled in 1871.  James and dozens of other men had been arrested in Cleveland County, North Carolina (just across the border from their home in York, County, South Carolina) for "Ku Kluxing."  Out of custody awaiting trial, it is reported that James fled to Pittsylvania County, Virginia, where he actually married again and lived until he was found some years later by his son Reuben.  At that stage, he returned to his family, asking forgiveness and was accepted back by Hannah.  Doug reports that James died in 1891.  See more details in the Notes for James Moore Green.)

In 1880 Hannah and her children are living next door to her parents Louis and Mary (Hamrick) McSwain.

A compilation of marriages in Rutherford County, North Carolina, reports the actual date of her marriage to James Moore Greene (here referred to by his father's name, James Monroe Green).

"GREEN, James Monroe and McSWAIN, Hannah - 30 September 1860 by William McSwain, Minister. Reg. 26 December 1860 (Page 175). Note: s/o James Monroe Green and Narcissa Hamrick. Both bur. Antioch Bapt. Chu Cem, Cherokee Co, SC."

Several family genealogies list Hannah's birth and death information.  Some report her burial in Antioch Baptist Cemetery, but none gave the location of the cemetery.  I found this information in a national grave registry that also provides photos of many graves.  Donald Greene, a great-great grandson of Hannah, referred me to this source and also contributed a photo of Hannah.  Donald also says of Hannah, "She was known as Big Granny to her family and she outlived four of her five children."

In 1900, James has returned and is enumerated with Hannah again.

Note that Hannah is reported as having borne 4 children and 4 are living.  But this leaves out Edward, who is mentioned only in 1870 as a 1-year old.  It appears that Edward died before the 1880 census.  In 1880 Hannah still has 4 living children, reported in the census.

In 1930, Hannah was enumerated at age 91 in her son Gilead's hosuehold in Sandy Run, rural Cleveland County, North Carolina

Donald summarizes Hannah's family relationships this way:
"Hannah McSwain the daughter of Rev. Louis H. McSwain. Hannah was married to James Moore Green the son of James Green and Narcissus Hamrick, whom you also list in your genealogy.  Hannah and J. M. Green are buried at Antioch church in SC, near her parents' graves."
--  Donald Greene, message in genealogy website guest book, 25 March 2008

All the burial information indicates, as reported above, that Hannah was buried in Blacksburg, Cherokee County, South Carolina.  However, she actually died in Cleveland County, North Carolina.  Her North Carolina death certificate reports the following details.

    North Carolina Death Certificates, 1909-1975
Mrs Hanner Green [Mrs Hannah Green]
    Widow, Age 92
Birth 8 May 1838 North Carolina
Death 21 Feb 1931 Sandy Run, Cleveland, North Carolina
[Her obituary reprots that she died in the home of her son Gilead in Double Springs, (Anderson County), South Carolina, just across the border.  Her residence was Sandy Run.]
Burial Antioch Cemetery (Cherokee Co SC)
    Spouse's Name J M Green
    Father's Name Louis L McSwain
    Mother's Name Mary Hammrick (sic)

The death certificate has the typed name of Hanner Green.  Written in hand is the correct Hannah Green.  The informant was Gilliard (Gilead) Green, her son, whose address was given as Route 4, Shelby, NC, the same as Hannah's.  But note that her obituary below reports that she died at the home of her son Gilead in Double Springs, which is across the border in Anderson County, South Carolina.  But Gileadhimself was burie din the Double Springs cemetery, which his death certificate says is near Washburn Station, NC.  Wanda Rabb tells me that Hannah was living with her son Gilead at the time she died.  Cause of death is reported as cerebral hemorrhage, with contributing causes old age or arteriosclerosis.  Time of death was 7:00 PM.

The place of burial is reported as "Antiarch" Cemetery.  This was the Cemetery at Antioch Baptist Church, a little farther south, just across the South Carolina state line in Cherokee County, near Blacksburg.  Her parents Louis Hobson McSwain and Mary (Hamrick) McSwain were buried there, as well as her husband James Moore Green, who had died before her.  The death certificate has an incorrect date of burial, 20 February 1931, the day before she is reported to have died!

Hannah's obituary refers to the cemetery location as "near Grover."  Grover, North Carolina, is just north of the border, and Antioch Church is south of the border toward the southeast on SC State Rd S-11-21.

Mrs Green Dies at Age 91 Years
    Mother of Squire Gilead McSwain
    Double Springs Community
    Buried at Antioch

Mrs Hannah McSwain Green one of the oldest women in the county, died Saturday night [21 Feb 1931] at the home of her son, Squire Gilead Green, in the Double Springs community.  [But note that her death record has the address of Gilead as Rt 4 Shelby NC, same as Hannah's.  Gilliard's death certificate reports that Gilead was buried in the Double Springs cemetery, which is says is "Near Washburn Station, NC" so there must be two Double Springs.]  Mrs Green was born August 5, 1839, and was 91 years, six months and sixteen days old when the end came.

She was the widow of the late J M Green and daughter of Rev Lewis McSwain.  Her husband preceded her to the grave 30 years ago.  They were married in the year 1860 and to this union five children were born, one of whom survives, Squire Gilead Green.

Also surviving are two brothers, L M McSwain and Reuben McSwain, 16 (?) grandchildren, (??) great grandchildren, three great, great grandchildren.  Mrs McSwain was a faithful member of the Baptist church for (??) years and a charter member of Grover Baptist church.  She was a woman of great faith and fortitude, having a smile and a kind, cheerful word for all with whom she came in contact.

The funeral was conducted from (at?) the residence of Squire McSwain at 11 o'clock Monday [23 Feb 1931] by Revs J W Sut(???) , D F Putnam and D G Washburn and her body was carried to Antioch Baptist Church near Grover for interment.
