Notes

  • There are discrepancies in sources as to the middle name of JohnJenkins.  Harold K Christian finds family information seeming toindicate that the son born at that date had a middle initial C, andsome corollary information that the full name might have been Cullen. In the 1860 census, however, he is reported as J W.

"One should note that the oldest known son of the family was namedJohn "Cull" (Cullen?) Jenkins ....  The second child in theenumeration was identified by the initials "J C", age 10 (born about1850, a male, with "Miss" listed as his place of birth. He is believedto be Joseph's oldest son, John C. (possibly "Cull" or Cullen)."
    --  Harold K Christian, Jenkins Journal, Jan 1982, p2

See the census transcription below.  The child is actually listed as JW. The initials J C appear to be from family sources, representingJohn Cullen.  JC had a son also named the same, called Cull.  Thenickname Cull seems to be used at times for both father and son.  TheCass County descendants know the son as Cull.

In May 2009 I found confirmation that the correct name was indeed JohnCullen Jenkins. Dorothy Wommack McNeely, a descendant of Cull, hadorganized much information on Cull's family and descendants.

The 1860 census reports him as J W.  This may be an error on the partof the census taker.  It is possible that the initial W for John wasconfused there and in some sources other with the next-born sonWilliam, whose middle initial also varies in sources.

In the 1880 Census of Cass County, Texas, census, it appears to bethis son John who has his own household next door to his fatherJoseph.  He is reported as John Jenkins, with his wife Julia  and sonIra, 1 year old.

In the 1910 census, JC's birth state is different from previouscensuses, as reported by his son (or understood by the enumerator). This census reports that J Stewart's father (JC) was born in Georgia, instead of Mississippi.  Also the birthplace of JC's wife Julia isAlabama instead of Georgia as in family sources and earlier censuses.
