The Voelker Family Tree on Ancestry has Alvis' middle name as Hertsell.  There is no documentation, and since I have found no record to this extent, I would conclude Voelker is reporting insider family knowledge.

Alvis Hertsell East moved from North Carolina, via Iowa, to Indian Territory in the late 1800s when homesteaders raced West to claim their own plot of land. A few years later Parts of nearby Oklahoma Territory were opened up for a land run. Alvis died in Chickasha, Chickasaw Nation, Indian Territory, just on the edge of Chickasaw Nation, across from what was then the Kiowa-Comanche-Apache tribal reservation.  These all became part of Oklahoma State in 1907.  Chickasha is now in Grady County, Oklahoma.

His wife Jane applied for a military pension base don Alvis's service in the Union Army in the Civil War.

There are two memorials on Find a Grave for Alvis, one in Chickasha, Oklahoma (Chickasaw Nation), where his second wife and at least one child are also buried.  The other is in their former home area of Clarinda, Page County, Iowa, from which they moved to Missouri then Indian Territory.  Both memorials have the same date of death.  The Iowa marker has no dates.

Alvis served the Union under two enlistments in the Civil War, first in the Missouri 14th Regiment for 6 months in 1861.  Then he joined the 23rd Iowa Infantry, in September 1862.  He served in both cases as staff surgeon.

I note that the Iowa memorial reports he died in Iowa.  This appears to be part of his military records.  This is strange, since his wife Jane and their sons Alvis H Jr, and George died and are buried in Chickasha, Oklahoma.  Another son Theophilus H East also lived there for many years before he went to Western areas and Mexico to serve as a doctor his last few years, before passing away in Colorado.
